Paul didn’t waste his 1,211 words in order to create a mirror so that we can clearly see who we are, and he is also not going to waste the following 11 verses to tell us that there was a turning point when the promise of salvation, spoken all the way back in Genesis 3:15, manifested in Jesus Christ, the righteousness of God.
This is such great news and I hope that once again you are truly encouraged by this message. Yes, we are sinful through and through, “But Now . . .”

There are 1,211 words from Romans 1:18 to Romans 3:18. Paul tells us in verse 19 why he has been so meticulous to write about who we are (our position, our character, our speech, and our actions). It is amazing that even though he has built a rock solid case regarding all of these issues, we still tend to defend ourselves and denounce any difficulties that come our way as undeserved. Paul makes it clear that we are found guilty before the Lord. Once found guilty, how will we avoid punishment? The Apostle is teeing up the next passage, so hang in there with me. Our sinful nature moves us from proclaiming our sin to acting it out in violent ways. The frightening thing is we are quick to get there. As we look into the mirror again, know that the ugliness you see in your past – we are all there with you. The question is, have you been forgiven, or are you continuing down the path of violence, misery and ruin? You do not have to be controlled by your sinful nature. God has provided salvation. Will you continue to live “under sin?” Or, will you allow God to change your dwelling to living “under grace?” – Dr. Paul Lyle

This week, in part 3 of the sermon series, “People, We Have a Problem,” we move from the CHARACTER of man to the CONDUCT of man. Paul describes the NATURE of our conduct and then he identifies the PARTICULARS of our conduct produced by our nature, beginning with our speech. The apostle strings several Old Testament passages together to drive home his point. It’s to hear that none of us do good and have all become worthless.
